Water pools will generate in treetops, and Darkwood Trees can be found on Slime Islands overhead as well. 2-4 stacks of logs is plenty (you can craft them into planks as you need) Full diamond armor is suggested. In the Dark forest you can find Bats, Fireflies, Mist Wolves, King Spiders, and most hostile mobs.
